What’s There

Seoul is the capital of South Korea and it’s nicknamed the “Special City” for a reason. Mixing neon lights of today’s world with thousands of years of tradition, this city can be a bit of sensory overload in the best way possible. Any visitor has to check out the royal palace Changdeokong, which is arguably the most beautiful of the city’s 5 palaces (although you should still check out Gyeongbkgung palace too!). Definitely pop by the largest market in Korea, Namdaemun Market, where you can find almost anything your heart desires and get a cool feel for the city while eating all the street food. And of course, after exploring palaces and the Buddhist temple of Bongeun-sa, shock your senses by visiting the futuristic cultural complex of Dongdaemun Design Plaza and Park (preferably at night since everything lights up). The contrast is pretty wild!

Who’s There

The people of Seoul are very proud of their nationality and identity. Respecting your elders here is very important, so always give up your bus seat for an elder and use two hands to give or receive something from them to avoid any awkward situations. While the weather is nice and tropical in the summers, winters can be cold. You don’t have to dress hyper-conservatively here, but definitely pack on the more modest side and avoid jeans and T-shirts if you want to blend in (they’re acceptable, but you’ll stand out even more). Ladies, if you’re wearing a skirt be sure that you can sit on the floor comfortably and keep everything covered as you might have to do this at some restaurants. Also, be sure to wear shoes you can easily take off for visits to temples.
