Jordan Flights Guide

Start unravelling the Middle East's layered history in Jordan, a hospitable and safe oasis in the often troubled region. The country is littered with Biblical, Roman, Nabataean, and medieval references, offering travellers a wealth of activities, historic sites, cultural experiences, and cuisines to choose from.

From Amman's modern metropolis, you can head south to the Gulf of Aqaba, a sliver of land looking out onto the Red Sea. The well-preserved coral here is deserving of a few days spent diving and snorkelling and is much less crowded than neighbouring Egypt's shores. On the way, you can stop off at the Dead Sea coast for a therapeutic mud bath, go rock climbing on Wadi Rum's granite cliffs, and look out for oryx at the Dana Nature Reserve. Of course, don't leave without a wander through the sandstone magnificence of Petra.

Try your hand at a sheesha (water pipe) while you visit Bedouin camps and chat with the tribes about their ancient nomadic traditions. This is also the best place to sample the Jordanian national dish of Mansaf, made with yogurt, rice, and lamb. For those less adventurous, there's always the staple of falafel and hummus. In the month of Ramadan, remember that visitors should not eat, smoke, or drink in public during the hours of fasting.

Booking Flights to Jordan

International flights arrive at Jordan's Queen Alia International Airport (AMM) which is approximately 35 km south of Amman. From there, one can get buses, taxis, or rental cars into the city. Although there are no direct flights to Amman from Canada, Air Canada flies to Amman via Chicago. Several other airlines like US Airways, American Airlines, Delta, and Continental do the same with their code-share partners such as Emirates and Egyptair. You can also connect to Royal Jordanian Airlines flights from the Middle East, or to fly from Amman to Aqaba.

When to Go and Weather

Summers and winters are both extreme, although the temperature at Aqaba stays at a comfortable 20°C throughout the winter, so it's always a good time to visit the coastal region. In Amman, daytime temperatures range from 12°C in wintertime to 36°C in the summer. It can snow in wintertime in Amman and Petra, and the summers are hot and extremely humid (except for the desert where it is very hot and dry) so the best time to visit Jordan is in the March to May and September to November periods. June is a peak travel period and fares are high, so book well in advance if you want to travel during this time.
