Booking Flights to Newark

Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) is one of the busiest airports on America's east coast. Passengers travelling to New York often fly to EWR as flights to Newark are often cheaper than flying to JFK or LaGuardia.

EWR is served by a large number of domestic and international airlines including Air Canada, American, Continental, Delta, WestJet, and Porter.

When to Go and Weather

Newark summers are humid and temperatures can go as high as 30°C while in winter, it can drop to -5°C. Weather-wise, shoulder season visits are preferable. Spring and autumn offer milder weather and less humidity, and since cheap flights to Newark are available at most times of the year (barring the winter holidays), these are the best times to book your airline tickets.

Arriving in Newark

Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) is a large airport consisting of terminals A, B, and C. Passengers on Newark flights with connections to make should use the convenient free inter-terminal AirTrain service. The airport's website has detailed information on all ground transport options, and a summary of these is provided below.

Public Transit:

Bus: New Jersey Transit buses on Routes 37, 40, 62, and 67, run between the airport and downtown Newark. Bus stops are located outside each terminal and ticket prices depend on the route and destination you're travelling to. Fares to downtown Newark average $2 USD and you can get discounts on tickets for seniors and children.

Train: Passengers using the AirTrain to connect to the airport's rail station will have to pay a $5.50 USD fee to use the connection to these services. This fee is included in the price of tickets bought online or in advance. But if you're planning on buying your tickets at the airport station, you will need to pay this connection fee at the airport, before getting on the AirTrain. Using NJ Transit and Amtrak, you can connect to Philadelphia and areas in the South, or Manhattan and areas in the North.

Airport Shuttle: Several private companies offer shared-ride and private vehicle shuttle services, and the price for these depends on your destination and the company you book with. Most shuttle companies at Newark have dedicated services to New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut, so if you're keen on to Newark travelling by car, it may be easier to just take a cab.

Hotel Shuttle: If your hotel provides courtesy shuttle services from the airport, take the AirTrain to the P4 area of the airport's parking garage, where all hotel shuttles depart.

Taxi: Cabs are easily available outside all the terminals. Keep in mind that there are extra charges on the regular fare which include a $5 USD surcharge during rush hours and weekends, and an oversize baggage fee (over 24 inches). A cab ride to Newark's city centre costs about $15-$18 USD.

Car Rental: Avis, Enterprise, Hertz, and National have rental car kiosks at the P3 area of the airport parking garage while Budget and Dollar operate from the P2 area. P2 and P3 are both accessible via the free AirTrain service.

Other: For connections to LaGuardia and JFK, you can choose from several shuttle options like NYC Airporter and ETS Air Shuttle. Alternatively, you can go the luxury way and arrange to have a limousine collect you at the curb right outside the terminal exit and take you to your final destination.
