Pittsburgh acquired many nicknames over the centuries — "The City of Bridges" because it spans three rivers has more bridges than Venice, "Iron City" and "Steel City" reflect its industrial heritage, "Ketchuptown" celebrates it as the home of H.J. Heinz Company. These days you're more likely to hear Pittsburgh called "The City of Champions" for its support of athletic excellence, or "America's Most Livable City" as decreed by Forbes among others.
Forget about steel. "The Burgh" shaken has off the Rust Belt label and transformed itself into an art and culture mecca and a hotbed of innovation and excellence. Pittsburgh flights will take you to a city with an enormous range of attractions including more museums and galleries than you could reasonably see in a lifetime, sports teams of every stripe (black and gold stripes, naturally), and history galore. And all this is surrounded by gorgeous Pennsylvania countryside.

When flying into Pittsburgh, you will land at Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT). The airport has a single terminal, which has won numerous awards for its efficient design that minimizes aircraft movements and is, more importantly, very user-friendly for travellers. All Pittsburgh flights arrive and depart from gates clustered at one end of the building, and there are convenient moving sidewalks to help visitors get around.
From there you will have five options for getting into the city:
Public Transportation: The most economical mode of transport is the 28X Airport Flyer bus which costs about $3 per ticket and stops at several "T" stations en route to the city centre before reaching its final stop in Oakland. It is approximately a 30-minute ride from the airport to downtown Pittsburgh. Note that you must have exact change to pay your fare on the bus. Children and persons with disabilities are eligible for discount fares, while senior citizens ride free.
Hotel Shuttle: If you are staying at a hotel while in Pittsburgh, they may provide a complimentary shuttle transportation to and from the airport. This applies particularly when staying at a hotel near the airport. It's worth checking when booking accommodations whether your hotel offers this amenity.
Taxi: Taxis are easy to find at Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT), right outside the landside portion of the terminal. The average fare from the airport to downtown Pittsburgh is approximately $40 CAD, and takes about 20 minutes.
City Shuttle: Shuttle service is available through SuperShuttle and can be booked in advance online, by phone, or through their mobile phone app. Once your flight lands and you have collected your baggage, proceed to the SuperShuttle counter near Door 4.
Car Rental: Renting a car is easy to do at Pittsburgh International Airport. Counters for all of the major car rental companies, including Alamo, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, and Hertz are available on-site and are located in the baggage claim area of the landside section of the terminal.
