Jordan is perhaps best known for the stunning Nabatean archeological site of Petra. And with good reason, the tombs and temples carved directly into sandstone cliffs are an awe-inspiring sight, and have been featured in numerous films, including the third installment in the Indiana Jones series. The Middle Eastern country, however, is more than the one claim to fame. Set on the banks of the Jordan River, Jordan features several important archeological sites and historical monuments, as well as bountiful natural beauty and even beach resorts on the Dead Sea. Jordan also remains a bastion of relative stability in a region all too familiar with conflict. Amman, Jordan's capital city, features the Citadel, which include the Temple of Hercules and the Ummayad Palace, as well as the Roman Theatre, the Jordan Museum, and, for a taste of modern Jordanian culture, the Darat al-Funun, which showcases local contemporary art. Amman also serves as a jumping off point for Petra, the Dead Sea and the sands and canyons of Wadi Rum.While in Amman, look to the Jebel Amman area for luxury, while the less expensive options will be found downtown. For the ultimate in luxury, stay at the Four Seasons Amman, with its spa and rooftop pool. The Grand Hyatt Amman is almost a city unto itself, with everything from apartments to restaurants to an actual mall, and it is a good high-to-mid-range choice. For the budget-conscious, the Jordan Tower Hostel offers a friendly atmosphere and an excellent location. Though stable and safe compared to its neighbours, caution should be exercised in Jordan due to the threat of terrorism.
