Kona Vacation Guide

From ancient royalty to missionary preachers, Kailua Kona was the preferred place to be in all of Hawaii. Not much has changed since then and vacations to Kona continue to be popular owing to the Big Island's great weather, wide choice of outdoor sports and activities, and spectacular landscapes.

Can't function without a hit of caffeine in the morning? Not to worry. The strong aroma of Kona coffee will be more than enough to get you up and about, and by the time you've had your first sip, you probably won't be able to go back to your home brew ever again. Once you've loaded up on this special java, let the adventurer in you loose. You can spend every waking hour surfing, kayaking, rafting, diving, and snorkeling, or choose to explore the area's natural attractions instead with volcano tours, waterfall dives, and whale watching excursions. Cheap restaurants abound in Kona serving everything from delicious local fare to international cuisines, and scattered all around the island are reminders of Captain James Cook, the first European to reach the Hawaiian islands and introduce them to the West.

When to Go and Weather

The Big Island's varied geography means that depending on where you are, you can experience sun, rain, heat, and chilly winds, during your Kona vacations. Thankfully, Kona is on the leeward side of the island and is much warmer and drier than the rest of the island. At most, the area receives 2-3 inches of rainfall per month, and even that is distributed through occasional showers that never last more than a couple of hours. Average annual temperatures range between 26-30°C, making this an ideal year-round vacation destination.

To avoid paying peak-season rates for flights and hotels, avoid travelling in the from December to February, as well as between July and August, when Kona is extremely popular for family vacations. In addition, check to make sure your travel dates don't coincide with popular events like the Ironman Triathlon World Championships held in October, as package deal prices will be more expensive around these weeks. At any other time during the year, cheap holiday packages are easy to find and can get even cheaper if you go with all inclusive deals.
