Managua Vacation Guide

Ravaged by wars and earthquakes, Managua is a city that has survived the odds and lives proudly to tell the tale. Get your vacation off to a great start as you gaze down on Nicaragua's capital from the heights of the Augusto Sandino monument. Surrounded by the Tiscapa Lagoon Natural Reserve, this is a special place to take in the calm waters of the volcano lake, skim the surface with zip-line tours, or just look out onto the blinking lights of the city below.

The city's historic downtown area is an open-air museum filled with reminders of Nicaragua's colonial past, its civil wars, and several natural disasters, none of which have been able to diminish the vibrant energy of its inhabitants. Attractions on the tourist circuit include the National Palace, Managua Cathedral, and 6,000 year-old footprints preserved by volcanic ash. The real treasures however, are to be discovered by strolling through the city's streets to find the best of cheap restaurants, cafes screening the latest in indie cinema, and chatting with at least a few out of more than a million of the city's locals.

When to Go and Weather

With temperatures ranging between 28-38°C throughout the year, the only factor to consider when booking all inclusive vacations to Managua is the rain. The city's wet season is concentrated between May and October, although there is a chance you will encounter light showers throughout the year.

Most visitors choose to book Managua vacations in the dry season between November and April, which is when you will need to book far in advance to avoid paying peak season prices. As a compromise between good weather and cheap deals, plan your holiday for the beginning of November or the end of April, which is when vacation rates and the rainfall are both relatively low.

Keep in mind that as the country's capital and largest city, Managua is also major business and financial destination and flights and hotels are kept busy throughout the year. Making sure you don't leave your vacation bookings until the last minute is the best way to get good deals, as prices aren't entirely dependent on tourist traffic.
