Rising from the banks of the Rio Duoro, Porto is an unmissable port of call on vacations to Portugal. By all means, spend as many hours as you like along the river banks, sipping glass after glass of the sweet wine Porto is famous for. But after you've traversed the touristy route and checked everything off your guidebook list, take to the streets and get lost in what many consider to be Portugal's most characteristic city.
Porto may come across as grittier than urban Lisbon and medieval Sintra. But what the city lacks in style and sophistication, it makes for with a great deal of personality and atmosphere. Its colourful houses and crowded bars are just a few signs that this city is brimming with vibrant energy. By the time you are done discovering the winding interiors of the Livraria Lello bookstore, exploring Portugal's past at the city's museums, and appreciating the breathtaking architecture of the Sao Francisco church, you will soon realize what prompted UNESCO to name Porto a World Heritage Site.
If you've got an hour or two to spare, hop across the bridge to neighbouring Gaia and enjoy spectacular views of Porto's nightlights as you sit on the grass and enjoy cheap francesinha sandwiches, sold at the local street stalls.
The warm weather and lack of rain brings in most tourists in July and August. All inclusive vacations to Porto are not cheap in these months, with flight and hotels filling up quickly several weeks in advance. Prices dip between September and February owing to the wet weather, but there are still several festivals and events held in the winter and package deals will not be at their cheapest around those weeks. If you don't mind the rain, book outside of the event dates and get affordable all inclusive deals as well as fewer tourists in the city.
March vacations to Porto are the best bet for good weather and cheap deals, but be sure to travel before the rains pick up again from April to May.
