Unawatuna Beach

Unawatuna Beach is one of the most famous tourist spots in Sri Lanka. The palm-lined beach and turquoise water are a beautiful backdrop for swimming, beach games and people-watching. Walk to the beach’s west end and up the stairs to a small hill. Here you will find a pagoda, a big Buddha statue and a gorgeous view overlooking the entire ocean. Just steps from the beach is the Unawatuna Center, a great spot for restaurants, souvenirs, jewelry and essentials. Come for the day or stay for the night. There are accommodations to fit anyone’s budget.

Getting there

Your exotic beach vacation is within your reach. Travel to Colombo’s Bandaranaike International Airport. From there, Unawatuna is just a 150 km journey away. Venturing through Colombo’s busy streets in a private vehicle takes over 3 hours. You can make that trek via tuk-tuk, taxi, or aircon mini-buses. Or you can cut that time by heading south-bound on the Southern Expressway for two & half hour train ride from BIA Katunayake to Unawatuna. If you’ve already booked accommodations, you might want to consider checking if they offer airport pick-up for an additional charge. Whether you are traveling from North America, Europe, Asia, Australia or any other part of the world, you can easily catch a flight to Colombo.
