Prainha Beach

Described as one of the hidden jewels of Rio de Janeiro, Prainha Beach is flanked by cliffs covered in the Atlantic rainforest. The beach is not very long, consisting of about 700 meters of pristine coastline. Being a favorite amongst Rio’s surfing community the beach became part of a protected zone where construction is prohibited. The beach itself is so gorgeous you could spend the entire day just lying there sunbathing and going for the occasional dip but if you’re in the mood to work up a sweat, a one-and-a-half-hour hike from Prainha beach to Caeté Summit offers panoramic views incorporating the stunning mountainous coastline that Rio is so famous for.

Getting there

While Prainha Beach is a great destination with hotels in the area, it also makes for a wonderful day trip from Rio de Janeiro. Prainha Beach is a short drive southwest from Rio de Janeiro. It is accessible via Avenida Estado da Guanabara which runs the length of the beach. Private transport arrangements can usually be made through your hotel or you can hop on the famous surf bus which picks up passengers at Copacabana and Ipanema beaches. A return flight from Canada to Rio de Janeiro can be booked from as little as 750 USD. North Americans can easily get a flight from Calgary, Vancouver, Toronto, Ottawa and most other Canadian cities.
